I think this may be a very good application of the SEP field. The apparent simplicity of the gender identity mess makes lulls people into a false sense that someone, somewhere must be dealing with it, yet casual examination reveals such a torrent of madness that the mind wants to shy away from it, so the SEP is reinforced - "Someone else *must* be dealing with this. This can't be happening." Whichever direction it is approached - safe spaces, sports or shortlists, puberty blockers, child surgery, homosexuality - the "wtf" response is strong and repels from the subject.
I truly believe that the vast majority of people don't believe it/believe nothing is *really* happening.
I thought like that too when I first came across the issue. It looked soooooo far fetched, and yet... new boundaries are broken on an almost daily basis.
Yes indeed. The truth is so far beyond fiction at this point it must be really easy to think "No, I must be misinterpreting", or "This is from a biased/unreliable source" (one of the reasons so much effort has been put into undermining so many good voices), or just "I've been supporting this for so long, I can't believe I've been wrong". In a way, I'm glad I became aware of it some years ago, because I'm fairly sure my brain would be skittering away from the sheer, unbelievable horror of it all if I came to it now.
Yes, it's not drop everything right now, because no one wants to do that if they aren't directly impacted...but it is, yes, you need to ask questions about it, push back if anyone is canceled regarding this topic, etc. Ask your pediatrician about the Cass Review. Make sure any kid you know knows that it is unhealthy to have secrets from your parents that are shared with others (even doctors or teachers) and that anyone who encourages this deserves suspicion. Ask any doctor you know or therapist you know if they have read the short take-aways from the Cass Review....
It is, as someone said below, too crazy to believe, that this could happen without a solid evidence base of benefit and of it being the best option for these people. And yet, here we are.
Amusing and well-written but I disagree with the central premise. I think the Somebody Else’s Problem Field gets applied to problems that are mind-blowingly simple. Helen Joyce and many other Gender Criticals have said much the same thing: 'This isn't complicated. Men can't be women.' Just as with the Emperor's New clothes, it's when a falsity is simple and obvious to comprehend that people need to be scared off it with draconian threats and that's when and why they treat it as 'Somebody Else's Problem.' Humans have a great zest for tackling complex problems: quantum mechanics, general relativity, the global economy, space travel... you name it. And it's precisely because these problems are technical and have no immediate social consequences that the Field is left off.
Do you think it helps that in this particular case the “someone else” is women and girls?

Excellently written.
Bonus: I have learnt a new meaning for "conceit". ;)

I agree.
We also have limited bandwidth. Many people are unable or unwilling to follow multiple issues.

You're a hoopy frood! Glad to sass you!
Didn’t Douglas Adams write humans out of history? He must have been talking about the alien condition. Zaphrods people.
